Niyama private islands Maldives brings surfing to the shore

Anantara’s sister property in the Maldives, NIYAMA Private Islands is taking luxury surfing to the next tubular level

Most of the surf spots in the Maldives remain an undiscovered secret, or those in the know keep it so, but at NIYAMA Private Islands Maldives the secret is right in front of you at the only luxury resort sporting surf-able waves that break directly onto the island.

Off the beaten track with uncrowded waves and high-quality breaks, NIYAMA Private Islands introduces a series of surf options and tailored services that invite professional and novice surfers alike to revel in their own version of luxury by enjoying adrenaline-charged activities right on their doorstep.  Here the waves are relatively mellow and playful, but challenging at times and suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers, with some spots perfect for beginner coaching.  Surfers can expect a consistent set of around five average surf-able waves rolling out every five minutes, and no crowds.

Aptly known as Nature’s Playground, NIYAMA Private Islands offers adjoining twin islands, Chill and Play. Just off the edge of Play Island’s Surf Corner is Vodi surf point – a classic, powerful left-hand ride that breaks onto the shore.  Off to the West and just five minutes away by speedboat is Kasabu surf point at Kudahuvadhoo Corner – a superb right-hander with barrelling sections. Head East for ten minutes to Hocus Pocus at Maeenboodhoo Corner for another barrelling right-hander.

134 studios, suites, and pavilions dot both islands or extend out over the azure lagoon.  Right on the beach at Surf Corner, surfers can chill out in customised Surf Beach Studios, Surf Beach Studios with a pool, or a Surf Family Beach Suite with a pool, ranging from 135 to 255 square metres.  The studios and suites are fitted with a surfboard rack and stocked with surf amenities and necessities, including bicycles with a surfboard rack and dedicated television channels displaying up-to-the-minute surf reports and a live feed of the nearby Vodi surf point.  Each room is equipped with a king bed and Deli-In with full-size refrigerator overflowing with gourmet treats, as well as Thakuru (butler) service.

As the sun sets over the ocean swells, head off to the Surf Shack at Vodi surf point with the dudes to recall the day’s kick outs, bottom turns and barrels.  Here surfers can drink classic Rum cocktails from the Caribbean Islands and Jamaican comfort food to the laidback island rhythms of reggae music.

FLOAT, NIYAMA Private Islands’ water sports operator, offers an array of tailormade surf programmes and services developed in association with LUEX.com, one of the world’s leading luxury surf tour operators, to suit every surfer.  From beginner coaching courses to various surf pass options that offer on-demand boat transfers to surf points located away from the resort, the professional Surf Dude is on hand to coax first timers or use video analysis to help intermediate surfers get to the next level.

Always daring to be different, NIYAMA Private Islands offers the ultimate luxury surf experience – a private seaplane at surfers’ disposal to discover and surf secret spots.  The seaplane allows surfers to jump in directly behind the waves anywhere on the ocean, and swim back to the plane for the scenic short journey back to the resort.

Christmas Eve will see a TropiCarnivale-themed celebration at the water’s edge at Fogliani’s, while romantics at heart can opt for an intimate five-course dinner as they perch atop the Maldives’ crystal waters in an overwater pavilion at Salt.

On New Year’s Eve, spectacular fireworks over the Laccadive Sea will radiate upon ocean swells to the rhythm of live smooth island beats. The TropiCarnivale-themed extravaganza starts with a gala dinner on the beach at Fogliani’s or an exquisite set menu dinner with wine pairings over the water at Salt, and culminates in a countdown party accompanied by designer cocktails at Umbar to see in the new year in chic island style.

Fashionistas will also be treated to a designer collection this festive season by Indian leather artisans Nappa Dori, the latest offering in a stream of artistic collaborations for PULSE by PER AQUUM.

PER AQUUM Niyama

Aptly known as Nature’s Playground, PER AQUUM Niyama offers adjoining twin islands, Chill and Play, where couples and families alike can be as active or laidback as their festive fantasies desire.  Here holidaymakers are invited to revel in their own version of luxury by enjoying adrenaline-charged activities, frosty fairytale vibes and spellbinding feasts, or retreat into surreal bliss, giving thanks for the dawn of a new year.

On Christmas Eve, island carollers will spread traditional festive cheer on the beach, followed by a White Christmas Eve gala dinner on the oceanfront at Epicure and an intimate fine dining feast over the water at Edge, 500 metres out to sea.  With Santa Claus expected to make a tropical grand entrance on a surfboard from the fantastic swells just off Play Island’s edge, kids of all ages can join him on a treasure hunt around the islands on Christmas Day and an afternoon Christmas Party in the resort’s sprawling Explorers Children’s Club.

Festive Season, PER AQUUM Niyama

On New Year’s Eve, the festivities will come to a crescendo on the beach with a Countdown Glow Party, after a cocktail party at Tribal Beach accompanied by a live performance of arias from the musical Les Misérables and a gala dinner celebration at Epicure and Dune Beach.

Radiance is all the island rage this festive season, from nonsurgical facelifts by Beverly Hills-based Dr. David Alessi from the Alessi Institute for Facial Plastic Surgery to Intraceuticals oxygen-based facials at Lime Spa, and from total health transformation consultations by acclaimed New York-based health coach and longevity expert, Paulo Fernandes, to Glow Parties six metres below the waterline at Subsix, the world’s first underwater playground and lounge, to show it all off.

In a Maldives first, PER AQUUM Niyama’s Marine Biologist is growing a live underwater coral Christmas tree to be unveiled to holidaymakers during a lighting ceremony on 22 December 2016.  Positioned six metres under the waterline, the live Christmas tree will be visible just outside the windows of Subsix underwater lounge during the day and illuminated at night during the regular Glow Parties.  Using a technology called Biorock, a low current voltage runs through the Christmas tree’s support structure which helps coral grow faster.
